Oregon To Impose RENT CONTROL?! – Governments Are DESPERATE To Stop The CRASH

Josh Sigurdson talks with author and economic analyst John Sneisen about the desperate move by the Oregonian government to implement rent control. Oregon would be the first state to implement state-wide rent control.
SB 608, the legislation in question is likely to go into affect in the coming months (as both chambers of the legislature are Democrat supermajorities). It would stop landlords from raising the rent in the first year of tenancy.
Future rent hikes would also be capped at 7%.
This is what leads to slum lords. This is what leads to low quality garbage apartments. It’s the state attempting to further infringe the property rights of the landlords by giving them no incentive to improve the space their renters are living in.
This is caused in the first place by governments and banks. The vast printing of currency leads to the price of living skyrocketing. Inflation hits people where it hurts the most. In the wallet. On top of that, the ridiculous amount of regulations and taxes lead to owners attempting to do cash flow making very little profit. They then try to renovate and improve the place and they’re hit with rent control. This is an absolute sham of an idea. This comes as governments are desperate to stop the housing markets across the country from inevitably crashing as we see loans build up on top of loans and markets hit their peaks.
A dangerous game is being played here and the people unwittingly are hurt the most while stunned, under the belief that the state is there to help them and make things better for them. The state and banking system are creating the problems essentially and then coming in as the hero to save the day… By creating more problems… How convenient.

I have lived in Oregon for over 5 decades. I’m leaving as soon as I can manage the cost of relocating. Oregon is a toxic cesspool of socialism/Marxism.
The state is a total loss. Write it off. Move on.

I think it’s kind of finding a happy medium. I also live in Oregon and I understand why people who lean right don’t like the place. I mean it’s pretty left here. It’s also beginning to copycat California which means it’s a great thing if you own property and have a degree but it’s pushing a lot of blue-collar workers out. The biggest problem I’ve seen here is the rate of appreciation . people that have to pay rent have literally seen their rents double within a decade . actually it’s a little more than that. On the one hand you do have to LOL a little bit because the majority of people who argue against left politics say they are libertarian or right-wing yet when the free market works against them they don’t like it. You guys can’t have it both ways. Taxes are not the problem here. I mean we don’t even have a sales tax. The problem is a lot of money is coming here and making things more expensive. Ps you’re pronouncing the name of the state wrong. Its ore-gun in speech. The O in gon is pronounced as a U. Lastly also completely agree about the monetary policy. The Federal Reserve backing off rate hikes and especially Janet Yellen leaving rates low for so damn long led to this. Hard assets gain in value as fiat loses power. Wages are not keeping up with the rate of gain of assets. This is especially Troublesome for the poor which has been a direct result of the large increase in homelessness the state has experienced. I’m hopeful our government will take lessons from California but currently it doesn’t look like it. The government is indeed wasteful with their spending and we don’t see a lot for our money. I can point out multiple areas where they have put in sidewalks in places no one walks. Multimillion-dollar projects with no people around. That’s the kind of stuff that needs to stop.

I’m a landlord with 3 rentals in vancouver wa across the Columbia river from Portland or. I charge just below market value screen my renters and reward renters with good history. The rents are so high that I can easily afford upgrades and fixes and have a good profit too. My motto I dont expect renters to live in codentions I would not be willing to live In.

Wow you guys make no sense. Renters pay for all that non-sense. Most is protected by home owners insurance. And appreciation of home values. Sh@T hole are the creation of fascist who don’t want to do anything about any problem on their property. And want the local and state aid. To fix their issues of which they are responsible for.

3 YEARS AGO KATE BROWN STARTED THE RENT ESCALATION BY PASSING A LAW THAT FORCED ALL RENTALS TO ACCEPT SECTION 8 HOUSING.
ALL RENTS SHOT UP BECAUSE THE OWNERS TOOK ADVANTAGE OF THE LAW TO GET THE VOUCHER TO COVER WHAT THE OWNERS WANTED AND THE 1/3 paid by the RENTER IS GRAVY.
THE OWNERS WERE JUST TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THEIR NEW-FOUND GOVERNMENT WELFARE.
RENTS ALL ACROSS OREGON SHOT UP AND THERE WAS A MASS SCRAMBLE BY RENTERS TO REPOSITION. MANY ARE NOW HOMELESS OR LIVING IN CARS IR MOTOR HOMES AND BEING CONTINUALLY HARRASSED BY THE GESTAPO.
AS EXPECTED, RENTS CONTINUE TO CLIMB AND HOUSING ASSISTANCE IS ABOUT A 4 TO 5 YEAR WAIT AND INCE YOU GET A VOUCHER UT IS $40.00 TO 50.00 APPLICATION FEE WITH NO GUARANTEE YOU WILL BE ACCEPTED.
KATE BROWN IS A COMMUNIST CRIMINAL WHO SEEMS TO DELIGHT IN CALIFORNICATING OREGON.
AS A SANCTUARY STATE, CRIMINAL ILLEGAL ALIENS ARE FIRST ON THE LIST FOR RENTALS, HEALTH CARE, WELFARE, FOOD STAMPS, AND THEY STILL USE THE FOOD BANKS.
SO MANY SOCIAL SERVICE AGENCIES ARE FOCUSED ON THE ALIENS THAT LITTLE US LEFT FOR AMERICAN CITIZENS.
THIS IS BAD ENOUGH BUT THE REALTY IS WORSE.
AS YOU STATED RENTALS ARE DEGRADING YEAR BY YEAR.
THIS STATE IS CREATING SLUM LORDS BY POLICY.
CRIMINAL ILLEGAL ALIENS DOUBLE AND TRIPLE UP IN RENTALS TO THE POINT THAT MOST RENTALS NOW CHARGE ADDITIONAL FEES FOR WATER AND GARBAGE.
6 TO 7? PEOPLE IN A TWO BDRM APT. PARKING LOTS CRAMMED TO OVERFLOW FROM UNREGISTERED TENANTS.
THIS NEW RENT CONTROL WILL JUST MAKE MATTERS WORSE.
BROWN IS THE DESTRUCTION OF OREGON’S PREVIOUS LIVABILITY.
I KNOW ALL THIS BECAUSE I USED TO DO MAINT. ON. 126 UNIT COMPLEX AND AM NOW LIVING IN MY VEHICLE, 3rd YEAR, AND WATCHED THAT COMPLEX GO DOWN THE TUBES. RENT INCREASE OF $265.00 WITHIN 6 MONTHS OF LAST KATE BROWN CLUSTERF*CK LAW.

okay, but you two know very little about Oregon. How can you have a discussion about Oregon rent control, and not even mention the Urban Growth Boundary? Politically, Oregon is lost to the Socialists, we have to home-school or Christian school our children, even though we can’t afford it. Also, a lot of Oregon Patriots are moving to Idaho, even though most of them are not Latter Day Saints.

I live in Oregon. They are actually very responsible w their local laws to protect renters. Face it, real estate flippers and rich developers are completely screwing renters. In Portland, they also require a relocation fee paid to renters if they are no-cause evicted. I got screwed over by a landlord who sold his place out from under me 4 months after lease sign, just b4 that law got signed. Too bad for me: it cost me $2k+. I FULLY support rent control and renter protection law in a COMPLETELY overinflated housing market. That being said, prop taxes are ridiculous and unfair here to owners.

This “rent control” is a gift to landlords. 7% increase is pretty incredible:
$1,000 rent becomes $1,070 next year; then $1,145; then $1,225; then $1,310…I’m not sure what your objection is?
It allow for and encourages increasing rents.
